Most of this blog is going to be ripped off of a discusion in class, but still want to put my thoughts into words (more or less). As we decided in class Sally is a representaion of society, phonyness, and everything else that Holden hates. However, Holden thinks he likes her (society) because she seems nice and looks good. So he acts phony so she will spend time with him. Once he decideds to tell her how he really feels she starts to feel wierd and thinks he's crazy. So then she(society) leaves him.
This shows how society surns its back on anyone that doesn't conform. This is why Holden feels like such an outsider; even though he still conforms to society (more or less), he doesn't want to on the inside. He want's to act normal and not need to be phony all the time, but then everyone would turn against him like Sally.

To marry or not to marry?
Marriage without love is a hell for two.
How would you live? What would you do?
Leave and sigh, or stay and lie.
Your choices are easy, so what would you do?
No one would leap into hell; even if you leave, the pain can never subside.
But would you try to leap over it, if heaven lay on the other side?
Or would you stay in purgatory and try to hide?
Marriage with love is a paradise.
Is it worth it to roll the dice?
Knowing the punishment for one mistake?
This choice is not as easy to make.

Importance
Earlier today Mary and Cassie were arguing because Mary had killed a moth and Cassie thought that was unnecessary and cruel. My first reaction was that it was kind of mean, but then I thought about it and realized it was just a moth. They only live about a year and it will do nothing of importance in its whole life. I thought because it was of such little importance it really didn’t matter at all that Mary killed it.
However, almost instantly after I had made this decision I remembered the song Dust in the Wind. I realized that if I was willing to kill a moth just because of its insignificance then the same philosophy should apply to humans. We have an even smaller impact on the universe than the moth does on our world. If I am willing to admit to the moths’ insignificance then I would be for fitting the importance behind my own existence, and that of humanity.

Who would win?
Who would win, the muffin man or Anpanman? If you don't know Anpanman google it, and learn to read Japanese :P

Understanding
"I didn't even like her much, and yet all of a sudden I felt like i was in love with her and wanted to mairy her. I swear to God i'm crazy. I admit it."
For the last week or so my body has just been running on autopilot leaving my mind in a parallel dimension pondering the meaning of existence, myself, and a few other things to this effect. In the end my mind cracked under the pressure and now my mind has simply stopped, leaving my body on autopilot. The only thing I learned in exchange for my efforts to understand was the fact that I know nothing.
Holden’s random thought process in this book is very similar to how my mind was working during this period of time, except that he is pondering much less interesting things in my opinion. Holden clams he is insane, something I believe only sane people do, as far as I am concerned this proves his sanity. I mean think about it, no one who believes they are George Washington admits they are insane, that is what makes them insane.
I am starting to believe that Holden has made the same foolish mistake that I did and is trying to understand the world around him. After my painful atempts I now understand that understanding is not only impractical and unnecessary, but is a psychologically impossibility for anything of any real interest. I hope Holden realizes this, and just movies on with his life without looking too closely at the inconsistencies around him.
Don’t overanalyze life, just enjoy it. It’s all you have.

Evil
Hear no evil unless you can't help it. See no evil unless you don't know it. Speak no evil unless. . . you want to.
Ever since humans have become less God feering, and no big brother has been watching us, we have become more and more acustomed to evil in our lives. Drinking, gambling, and even eating on the wrong days were all once concidered mortal sins along with almost anything else you can think of. Even thinking the wrong thoughts could send you to hell. Now days we have started to bend the rules and we think "God will understand" anything we want to do! If the old testement is right i will see every soul living today in hell. . . The reason people in the past didn't do some of those "evil" things we do today was just because they thought that if they didn't do those things then they could go to heaven. In Holdens eyes that would just make them phony even if they became better people because of it. Even people today that do good things he would call phony becaues he thinks they don't really care. Although this may be true should they not do those good things? Would he preffer we all just be ourselves and steal, rape, and kill as we please? At least we wouldn't be phony. . . right?

Tale of a dead man
He stood paralyzed with confusion as the man who had just turned the corner in front of him lifted a gun from his side and fired a pullet point blank into his head.
He began to remember. It was as if he was reliving his life as it slowly drifted in front of his eyes. He saw his childhood, adolescence, and adulthood pass him by. It seemed to take years.
He then saw the man turn the corner and fire. He began to remember. . .
The idea (if you didn't already see it) is that when your life flashes before your eyes before you die what would stop it from doing it again after you reach the end? It would cause an infinite loop resulting in the absence of an afterlife.
