Evil

Hear no evil unless you can't help it. See no evil unless you don't know it. Speak no evil unless. . . you want to.
Ever since humans have become less God feering, and no big brother has been watching us, we have become more and more acustomed to evil in our lives. Drinking, gambling, and even eating on the wrong days were all once concidered mortal sins along with almost anything else you can think of. Even thinking the wrong thoughts could send you to hell. Now days we have started to bend the rules and we think "God will understand" anything we want to do! If the old testement is right i will see every soul living today in hell. . . The reason people in the past didn't do some of those "evil" things we do today was just because they thought that if they didn't do those things then they could go to heaven. In Holdens eyes that would just make them phony even if they became better people because of it. Even people today that do good things he would call phony becaues he thinks they don't really care. Although this may be true should they not do those good things? Would he preffer we all just be ourselves and steal, rape, and kill as we please? At least we wouldn't be phony. . . right?

  1. An interesting thing about Achilles and all the other heroes of old is that most of their actions would be frowned upon by modern society.

Not only did Achilles not have to worry about his gods when he pillaged villages, killing men, raping the women, and drinking and celebrating afterward is it was often in the name of their gods.

We have not just gotten eviler, the global village has shrunk, and now more and more people are our neighbors. So we have to actually care about whether or not we are caught because it is considered uncivil. So we have become more judgmental of what is and is not evil.

Though it would be interesting to see what Holden thinks of people without restraints.

  3. Kind of like how Sir Lancelot was actually 6'6", hairy, rarely worea shirt, used a battle axe, had TERRIBLE manners, and slaughtered thousands of peeps on the battlefield, and often took virgins from their homes.

And he was KNIGHTED for it.

  5. O yeah, i meant to quote alec on that. my bad :P
But Kieran i still disagree that people in like say the 18th century were just as evil as we are today. I should have specified a date though because your right about vikings and crusaders, but i didn't specify that enough. I mean all times had their outlyers. Just saying the people in the villages being destroyed were better people than we are today (not the people killing them.
